A little bit of Gujarat on the Elbe.
ગુજરાતી સમાજ ડ્રેસ્ડન is an informal community of students, scientists, professionals and families who happen to be Gujarati and happen to live in Dresden. Not a registered organisation. Not a members' club. Just people who like cooking, dancing, and checking in on each other.
Why we started
Dresden is a small city with a warm international community — but Gujarati-specific pockets are rare. A few of us were tired of celebrating festivals alone or explaining Navaratri one person at a time. So in 2022 we started pooling dates, phone numbers, and the occasional kilo of moong dal.
What we do
We host the festivals we grew up with — Navaratri, Diwali, the Gujarati New Year, Holi, Uttarayan. We organise potlucks. We keep a small phone tree for new arrivals who need help finding a flat, filling a form, or just finding someone who speaks Gujarati at the supermarket.
Who this is for
Anyone with a connection to Gujarat — by birth, marriage, language, food, or pure affection. You don't need to be religious, fluent, or "Gujarati enough". If you want to come to a gathering, you're in.
What we're not
We're not a Verein. We don't collect dues. We don't speak for anyone but ourselves. For official Indian-community events, Indian Association Dresden does a great job — we work alongside them where it makes sense.
Come to the next one.
